UFRGS-315 Introduction to Linear Models in Ecology
|Period P3e - Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Brazil||Year 2|
|UFRGS-315||Introduction to Linear Models in Ecology||4 ECTS||Period P3e||UFRGS|
|Objectives:Introduction to traditional techniques of univariate statistics (linear and multiple regression, t test, simple factorial ANOVA) by help of linear models. Analysis of residuals to evaluate if the adjusted model is adequate. possibilities for data transformation. General questions on the design of ecological studies (in experiments or in the field). |
Outcomes:To show that the statistical methods traditionally used in ecology are nothing but small modifications of simple linear regression models. Whenever introducing a new topic (or analysis), additions and modifications to the topics already presented will be made. The understanding of the simplest of all models will allow for rapid learning of the more complex models, where we have more than one independent variable or the variables are not continuous, but categorical. Diagnostic criteria for the evaluation of models will be discussed (analysis of residuals), as well as transformation techniques.
