Objectives:The course includes theoretical and practical/applied classes. The theoretical part consists of lectures and student seminars, while practical/applied classes will be conducted both in the laboratory of the UFRGS Center of Ecology and in the field. Basic contents of the course are: history of limnology. principal physical and chemical characteristics of water. physical and chemical environment of continental water bodies. aquatic communities. trophic relations in aquatic environments. principal types of continental aquatic environments. aspects of anthropogenic influence on aquatic environments.

Outcomes:The course (1) offers a theoretical basis for the understanding of principal processes that control the dynamics and characteristics of continental aquatic environments. (2) provides knowledge of the structure of populations and communities and of the principal factors that influences them. (3) introduces the students to different techniques of sampling, chemical analyses, identification and to ways/techniques to study processes in different compartments of aquatic environments and adjacent systems.
