|Period P3e - Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Brazil||Year 2|
|UFRGS-308||Biomarkers for Environmental Diagnostics and Monitoring||4 ECTS||Period P3e||UFRGS|
|Objectives:Impacts of toxic agents on living systems and ecosystem processes. Biomarkers to evaluate the presence of toxic agents by help of different biological effects. Strategies of physical, chemical and biological in different environmental compartments. Genetic biomarkers for evaluation of changes in environmental quality. Effects of explosion to toxic or genotoxic agents on human health. Legal aspects. Classes consist of seminars with discussion of book chapters or scientific papers, with theoretical introduction to stimulate discussion. |
Outcomes:To offer a general panorama on the knowledge about and use of biomarkers in environmental diagnostics and monitoring, with an emphasis on the effects of different contaminating agents. At the end of the class, the student should be familiarized with basic concepts, principal types of analysis and their application in ecosystem conservation and protection of human health, as well as of the legal situation. Special emphasis will be given to aspects of scientific research and methods applicable to the different points discussed.
