UFRGS-307Restoration Ecology – Field Studies5 ECTSPeriod P3eUFRGS
Objectives:Theoretical and applied approaches in restoration ecology, providing concepts, models, methodologies and tools for practices of ecological restoration. The course starts with theoretical bases of restoration ecology. Concepts and the background of restoration ecology currently recognized and debated by the academic community will be discussed, comprising ecological, technical and human values. After each major theoretical approach, articles providing case studies will be discussed, using examples from Brazilian ecosystems and others successful projects around the world.

Outcomes:The main aim is to discuss with students concepts, and theoretical and practical aspects of restoration ecology and ecological restoration. Students should be able to differentiate both approaches, connect theory and practice and be able to decide on restoration choices for distinct degraded ecosystems. Furthermore, students will be instigated to think about the present state and the future of our landscape, with a focus on subtropical and tropical systems, in which science and practice of restoration are still at the beginning.
