Period P3e - Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, BrazilYear 2
UFRGS-303Measures and Assessment of Biodiversity – Field Studies6 ECTSPeriod P3eUFRGS
Objectives:Contents discussed include: Sampling theory. Biodiversity database management in electronic spreadsheets. Rarefaction techniques. Biodiversity indices, species richness estimators. Relative abundance models. Alpha, beta and gamma diversity. Similarity indices, cluster and multivariate analyses. The issues will be discussed based on analysis of data from surveys conducted by students on field-trips (covering aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems) that are part of the course, thus providing the students with an introduction on biodiversity of different taxonomic groups in southern Brazil.

Outcomes:Provide the student with adequate basis for proper sampling, analysis and critical interpretation of inventory / survey data. Students shall learn how to collect field data for different taxonomic groups, employ the main software's available and understand outcomes and their implications. Provide knowledge on biodiversity in subtropical Brazil.
