|Objectives:This is a practical module spanning the autumn semester and half of the spring semester. It covers a wide variety of methods for surveying and censussing plants, animals, and habitats. It includes a comparison of methods and use of statistics. The lectures and workshops will cover: reasons for censussing, assumptions of sampling techniques, mark-release-recapture, distance sampling and other techniques for monitoring different taxa and habitats, diagnosing declines, and project planning. |
Outcomes:To introduce students to the principles and practicalities of survey techniques for a range of taxa and habitats. To develop skills in planning of ecological surveys. To teach students how to critically evaluate the reliability of published surveys and reports.
