Organisation of the IMAE Masters Course

You and your IMAEmates follow a common acquisition of a shared knowledge before to select your final training among the five elective specializations offered (cf. Figure 1 ).

The progression is the following:

Preparatory phase (Propaedeutic period) : Before your arrival at the University of Poitiers in France, you will be able to check or improve your knowledge in scientific requirements and language proficiency using online readings and exercises and languages training platform during a remote and interactive preparatory period.

The integrative period will build a group cohesion with our full support during your integration. You will also discover a new culture and be able to share yours to your IMAEmates.
An extended scientific study programme where all of you are familiarized with the main approaches in Ecology. Compulsory mobility tracks provide you with the opportunity to visit three institutions (in France and tropical field course – Amazonia, Highland, Galapagos – in Ecuador). During the first period all of you stay together from September to March.
In April the cohort is divided in two equal groups moving either to Germany or to Portugal specialized in two different applied domains (see study programme).
An in-depth scientific study programme and professional/research experience. You chose your specialization among the five elective streams, as validated by the consortium during the selection phase. Each specialization is associated with an institution where you will be registered and which will award you by the corresponding national MSc degree:

  • University of Poitiers, France (UP);
  • University of Coimbra, Portugal (UC);
  • Christian-Albrechts University, Germany (CAU),
  • University of East Anglia in England (UEA)

  • Federal University of Rio Grande de Sul, Brazil (UFRGS)
Your Master Thesis project can be carried out anywhere as long as the project is co-supervised by one of the nine partner Universities distributed all over the world.
The second year ends with a farewell congress where you present your project as well as all your IMAEmate, crowded again in France for this event, and in the presence of the new IMAE cohort.

Example of Possible Degree combinations: In the IMAE consortium, five partners are awarding their local degree (UP, UC, UEA, CAU and UFRGS, see Figure 1). The University of Poitiers is awarding at least 30 ECTS to all IMAE students and will deliver the French MSc degree to all students, with a customized Diploma supplement describing the complete study programme. The same goes for the University Christian-Albrechts in Kiel or the University of Coimbra (elective period P2 in year 1).

Consequently, the first year of the IMAE programme will lead to two distinct national degrees: the French MSc and the German or the Portuguese MSc according to the student’s mobility track.

A third degree will be awarded by the institution offering the specialization in the second year, if this institution is neither the University of Poitiers nor the University visited in Period P2. This regards the MSc Degree delivered by the University Christian-Albrechts in Kiel, the University of Coimbra, the University of East Anglia and the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul.
